How the Fishing Works - Cast, Hook, Reel
A system-by-system explanation of fishing in the HowToFish.click fan-made browser game.
1. The cast
Aiming is point-to-aim: press CAST (or touch the right side of the water) and drag toward where you want the lure to go - the drag direction IS the throw direction, and the drag length sets the power. The dotted trajectory preview includes gravity, air drag and land collision, so what you see is what you get. Rod upgrades raise maximum cast power from 1150 to 1750, which is also your maximum range.
2. The lure in the water
Once the lure enters the water it bobs in place for up to 16 seconds - and only ONE fish comes to look, never the whole school. It swims up, hovers, and tests the hook with two visible nibbles. Every species has a temperament that decides whether it bites:
- Calm fish (round bodies with spots) bite only a STILL lure. Do not twitch - any movement spooks them.
- Active fish (sleek bodies with a lightning stripe) chase a MOVING lure. Press TWITCH and they strike.
If the fish does not commit after its two tests, it swims away and you recast. Nothing bites forever anymore.
3. The fight
A hooked fish swims away from the boat at a speed that scales with its stamina. Holding REEL does two things at once: it pulls the fish toward you, and it raises line tension. The tension rate scales with the fish's strength, so a Volt Eel fills the bar much faster than a minnow.
The fight has four possible endings:
- Caught - the fish is within 55 px of the boat and tired (below 45% stamina). Reel in bursts, let it run, and it tires in seconds.
- Defeated - harpoon it to 0 HP. Instant win and a 1.6x value bonus.
- Escaped - 13 seconds without any reeling lets the fish shake the hook.
- Line broke - tension hit your line limit. The fish escapes and you reel the empty line back.
4. Reading the tension bar
The LINE TENSION bar sits at the bottom of the screen. It fills while you reel and drains when you stop. Above 75% it flashes LINE TOO TIGHT - release immediately. The Line upgrade raises the limit from 100 to 230, which matters most against rare, epic and legendary fish.
5. Runs and surges
Fish alternate between calm periods, runs (1-2 second sprints that pull line back out and make your reel almost useless) and surges (short sharp pulls with a tension spike). Runs and surges are the moment to stop reeling - reeling through them is how lines break. The fish also dives while running and rises toward the surface as you reel it close. Watch for splashes and glow effects: those are the telegraphs.
6. What the harpoon changes
Without the harpoon gun, every fight is a stamina battle. With it (level 1: 25 damage, 180 range), you can kill fish outright once they are reeled close. Defeated fish pay 1.6x. The boss cannot be tired out at all - the harpoon is the only way to damage it.
7. After the catch
Fish go into your boat hold (30 slots) and sell at the island dock. Heavier fish sell for more: value is the species base price plus about $5 per kg. A 10 kg Golden Kingfish with a trick shot can pass $1,000.
